Yes it is! I use to have a bichir that ate mealworms with no problem, just give him time to swallow it whole :) .
 
A word of advice use only the freshly shed ''white'' ones,The chiton on the older ones can be hard to digest and may cause constipation-Anne
 
ooooor....just use wax worms. I'm pretty sure they'd be ok, and nice and squishy.
I give my sorubim lima whole jumbo shrimp with the shell on, and my cichlids too. But my polyterus S gets nothing but the most premium of prepaired yummies, like chopped shelled shrimp, fish, squid and octopus, and at times, hikari gold cichlid pellets.
 
I wouldn`t feed meal worms too often, because in time you`ll get real fat fish :eek:
