Mean Discus?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
In the discus world females are the pimps, a big girl would put him in his place pretty quickly.

Females will actually kill infertile males if left to their own devices.

Yea, discus can be mean to each other. I bet he'll be fine once the others settle in and you put him back. The thing is, discus are tough to mess with once their all established. The best way to do discus is to put them all together at the same time, not with established guys alread in your tank, and either leave them alone or wait till two pair off and sell the rest. Either way though, in time he will get used to the others when you put him back. and I dont think hes chasing his reflection, cause they cant see their reflection. We only see a reflection when we are looking through two panes of glass, which creates a mirror image when theres water involved. They can see right through.

And I once had a discus who moved plants around. Contrary to the advice I just gave, I had a discus tank once which I pick and chose which discus to add in and added them slowly over time, and the biggest female ruled the tank with an iron fist. She was a full grown adult, and dwarfed all the others, and she would chase the juves around and not let them feed. Thats pretty much why I stuck to the advice I gave above when otherwise dealing with discus and it worked well.

Ya know... you just never really hear stories of ANY discus aggression. It's always how sweet and wonderful they are, how skiddish they are, and how hard they are to take care of? I know fish are fish and some are mean, but the limited experience I have with Discus, and from all the reading, it's just unexpected.
