well you know how it is,we could post a book on here on our own experiences but we really should just help the guy,it is fun to conversate on though.i sure dont have the patients to type all my moments with each species.i cant type very fast their are alot of beginners on this site, pros and in betweens, the hobbie can get old quick for a beginner if he gets bashed on his terminology.i know also that we dont want ppl to think the snakes are mean like they go hunting for humans just to f with them.one thing i notice is that some snakes can be cool for weeks and one day you get the hisssssssssss. All the sudden their cool again.ive seen ppl reach right to a burm pyth face and its cool, from what ive seen, hell no for me,anyway sorry for ramblin,I forgot about the herp threads.to much time in the lounge
Well its not like they WANT to hurt you, its the exact opposite. Most of us want to hurt them, they have a right to be angry about it. I don't even think most people deserve their snakes to be nice to them, some should be constricted right now lol.
What do you keep at the moment jason in the way of herps? Are you on kingsnake.com
sorry youll pry hate me but i thinned out everything for lots of reasons i can post later. Now i only have 2 snakes, surinam red tail, and red corn,5 tarantulas and 1 scorpion, setting up a 125 cich tank right now.ive also got a red nose pit and 2 rescued cats.mainly needed to give proper attention to each.I stopped breeding for stores when they stopped takin care of my babies and sellin them to minors.I mainly bread lepord gecks and beardies.Man i miss those days.Fav snakes i had were hogg island and solomon island boas, the green tree pythons were awsome.rosys were cool to breed.Anyways i realy dont have the extra time anymore and want to focus on the ones i have, however i may sell the corn.I had some rainbow boas to but man they loved to bite!Nothin was as fun as breeding the bearded dragons,at one time i had like 500 babies at once.made some good cash i could use right now.I wish ppl would just follow care facts when they get herps,so sad to see them waste away.
Actually, you would be surprised how many die due to canned bugs, being fed veggie diets instead of whole prey, not being fed at all and so many other weird food out there. Most of the herp failures out there are due to the lack of reading. Most of the ones I have met never read a care sheet and automatically assume that their herptile will adapt to people like a cat or dog.
yes let me take back the care sheet coment,i mainly mean reading up on the animal before and after its purchase.I personaly liked to get my info from other ppl who have succesfuly kept and bread them.there are good books out there.some of the mags are good too.i tend to feel that if someones not interested enough to read these books and mags then the hobbie might not be for them.i dont have many herps anymore and my fish tanks not even runnin yet but i cant get enough info to fill my cravings, however i did find this site and ive been feeling much more fullfilled.yeah, care sheets can be so off sometimes, just like size quotes on price tags in most fish stores i just dont get how they get away with it.
it also helps if ppl would look up the natural environment their animal comes from, summer and winter climates, humidity and food,i know a dude getting ready to adopt a 5 foot iggy and hes talkin of hot rocks and such, nothin like a good belly burn,im gonna have to talk to him.I ordered a hog island boa once and when it got to the store, the owner placed its entire tank on a heat pad,the snake was dead when i arrived,it had turned around and had its mouth wrapped around its body biting itself, can you imagine, same store would have piles of tick infested ball pythons for sale.the guy must have cash because the employese have called out animal control several times and he still is in buisness, this was 5 years ago but what gives.
No, when people read, its usually a bad source. Online caresheets are one of the worst sources, with a few exceptions. They are written by people who happen to keep an iguana alive for 3 weeks, think they are experts, and write a caresheet. Books cannot be constantly updated, that takes too long. There are a bazillion iguana books out there, and only 2 are accurate.
The best way to gather info is a forum, no doubt. Because aside from day-to-day accounts of keeping (the best part), they can tell you the right books and caresheets, they can tell you what you need in a nutshell. Books and caresheets are the BASIC GUIDELINES of husbandry. You get a good one, read it, and go from there and add your own touch. Thats what makes us individual keepers.
Something to think about: When people think of a terrarium, they try to recreate a slic of habitat. But theyll just take any ol' slice of habitat. What they should be doing is taking the entire natural territory of one animal and CONDENSING it. Thats the entire point of vivariums, some people just don't get it, even though its incredibly simple. People love to overcomplicate!
