I guess it depends on the fish because my motos have always been more aggressive than my grammodes.

True.

Motas are very aggressive especially when in breeding mode or guarding fry. One of the best and most protective parents.

Agreed^^^^^^^

I disagree. The istlanum is meaner and more personable. I have owned several of both species. I've kept juvies in the same tank together. The istlanum chased the hell out of the grammodes and anything else that moved. The shear persistence of chasing and aggression of the istlanum will make other fish of the same size back down. I have sat in wonder how the istlanum had enough energy to constantly pursue other fish incessantly.

So if you base the choice on availability, then grammodes is my choice. I have a male in a 55 gallon right now and he has and will kill any fish of similar size in there with him. A beautiful and unique-looking fish.

If you want to wait until some may come available, then istlanum is the way to go. I have a male istlanum in a 50 gallon tank alone. He wants to kill me, my kids, the cat, the other fish in the room, and the food you put in his tank. Much water is splashed out of the tank. If you ignore him he hits something so you know he is there.

Yup, male grammodes. You won't be dissapointed.

Ruck Fules, don't think i've seen any pics of your male, let's see them!

I get the impression he's looking for something a little more "Rip, bust, tear." Correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't Grammodes rather residing when housed solo?

I agree with you 100%. I was just giving him an option that would work if he were willing to wait. The wait may be a long time though.

Personally, I would do a Female Red Devil (Males get to big) a great Wet Pet for a 55 gallon tank and are mean as heck!

my male midas is in a 55, hes 11- 12 inch. full of personality and aggression. will attack my hand or the algae brush every time.
