wow, that is quite a job measuring all those. i know they can be quite fiesty out of the water i had my bichirs out of the tank recently too. that is cool you got to hear their noises. i didnt hear anything from mine
Your a PIMP Nice Collection ... Which 3 are you missing??? I am only familiar well not really familiar.. But have only noticed until now a dozen different ones
are those TL (total lenght) or SL (standard length) measurements? Just a joy ain't I? lol
One way to measure without a bunch of stress on the trim ring at the top or bottom of the tank either mark off one inch incremenmts or tape a ruler or yard stick to the tank
to clarify TL is from tip of snout to end of tail finnage
SL is from tip of snout to where the finnage begins and the body ends at the tail
SL is also the standard for scientific measurements as length of tail finnage can vary-Anne
I admire you for taking on 25 specimens all at once ... I would love to have a one species tank and observe their interactions, behaviors and habbits ... i think we can all benefit from your observations and update us with plenty of pictures ...
Those are TL measurements Anne. Indy let me down - since she got nipped badly by Medusa before I moved her to another tank, she lost probably a .25'' from the tail. Tongue33, I'm missing Bichir Bichir, Ansorgii and *going to try to spell this and I've only seen it twice... wish me luck** Teugelsi. I really love this species, and as they grow some of them that were only just another species I needed for the list are turning into my favorites. I didn't feel anything special when I got the P. Pollis but now they're one of my favorite species (little hogs!!) and once I got the Palmas Buettekoferis some other Palmas friends, I like them more than ever. The only species I remain ho-hum over is the Weeksii.... and that could easily be because an hour after I brought them home I went to feed the other fish and they went a bit nuts. Not sure how long it'd been since they'd eaten but they were ramming all my other fish and biting them, trying to steal their food. Now they don't seem to have much of a personality, which is probably why they remain nameless. But anyway, I've been breeding cons for food and I wasn't having much luck at first - the fish I bought were barely of breeding age and weren't very good parents yet. They abandoned the eggs (which promptly got eaten) or ate them on their own... but now I'm lookin at 100 half grown babies and 400 just hatched, one batch of eggs on the way and a fat mama who probably laid last night. Cons EVERYWHERE! Peruvian strain too Okay, time to do a headcount and filter check.
