Measuring your fish

body and tail

why would you just measure the body?

tail is part of the fish, so of course i measure. i dont understand the reasoning behing excluding the tail. it's like leaving out our legs when measuring our height :screwy:

I'm glad someone asked this question, as I was planning to ask it too.
I must be an old-timer then, because I assumed the fish was measured from the nose to the base of the tail. To me, this seemed more practical because some fish have long flowing tails that may be hard to measure.

I'll include the tail in my measurements now, if this is what is usually done.
That makes my Flagtail Prochilodus 15 inches now...cool!

Good 1 J. X2... never heard of measuring fish without the tail:D

I do body and tail. On my cats though, I don't include whisker length. That would add another 7 inches lol on one.

I measure body to tail, but do not include the fin (this is called Standard Lengh) . . .

the reason not to include the fin is that the fin has no relevant impact on the bio-load of the fish

it's not like leaving out your legs, it's like not adding your hair . . . you think if you had a mohawk it would make you 3" taller ? :grinno:
