Mechanical Disconnect Filtration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is fairly easy to remove a filter system from operation, by placing unions disconnects beneath shut off valves, and periodically throughout the system.
The unions allow you to disconnect the system without wresting with the pipes. I place them every couple feet throughout my tank and sumps plumbing.
Below is one just above the pump, to allow removing the pump from service, for easy maintenance.

you can also put shut off valves in different throughout the system to allow sections to be maintained without having to shut the pump off ( I usually run 3 or more tanks to a sump.

I'm familiar with the disconnects for hard plumbing and sumps. I am more so trying to avoid having to haul around the bulky canisters every week to clean out the waste. My tank will house at start 26 Kitumba frontosa, so easy swapping/cleaning of mechanical filtration is a must. A sump and filter socks seem like my best option, but the price seems to be climbing more and more (just to get 4 glass baffles cut my local glass shop wants $100).

Look at Hamburg-Matten Filters. Cheap, efficient, easy to clean. You can even change the pump without getting your hands wet. You can even grow moss/plants in them if you want, but it makes them harder to keep clean. I squeeze out and clean my sponges in a bucket of tank water during a water change. If you are worried the Hamburg-Mattens aren't good enough mech, box filters are just as good as FX6's.
