Mechanical Filtration before my bio?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm doing 200micron to 100 micron socks. With the 200 inside of the 100. Then into a settling area in the sump. It then overflows/pumped/sprayed onto 2 different micron pads one on top of the other then down the bio media. Of course I also use a good sponge filter on the pump as well before it returns.

What do you stock your tank with? And how often do you have to wash your socks? Do they ever overflow from being to clogged?

Tank has pretty heavy stock. Several good sized fish 4 different vieja, a jag, labatus, festae. Weekly 70-80% water change. I change socks about every 3 to 4 days. Twice a week I vac out the sump debris trap. Rinse the coarse pad weekly and replace the fine pad every 7 days. The socks can overflow but I've got it so they overflow into the debris trap. I change them before that to reduce dissolved organics

When you say change your socks do you mean throwing them out and replacing them with a new one?

Nope. I've got 8 of both sizes. When one gets dirty and needs changed I bag it up. Set it aside. When I have 6 or more I take them and toss them in the clothes washing machine no soap. Just on heavy duty extra rinse spin dry, and they come out spotless. I let them air dry and put them back in rotation for use.

How is the settling chambers? With the 200 in the 100 is there still particles then end up in the settling chambers?

Yes. But very very very little. I clean it up every water change. I get probably about the side of a 50 cent piece if dust on the bottom I syphon out.
