Mechanical filtration first ?

So, above sump for mechanical and below sump for biological? Very odd. Why don't you just have one sump hidden under your display tank that accommodates mechanical, biological and your return pump? Access shouldn't be an issue if your stand is built right.
What I think I am going to do. Is just have it run down to the bottom sump first. Down into a filter sock. Through bio media, and back up to more mechanical filter.

Ideally I don't want to have to go down to the bottom sump as much. That's why I wanted to do an above sump. To make life easier.

The thought is cool but having both on one loop seems very complicated and would require 2 pumps if the top sump was used as mechanical first. I could see mechanical in the lower sump pumped to the above tank sump where bio would be located and allowed to gravity feed back into the tank

Yea. So my plan now is to have it gravity fed down to the bottom sump first. And then back up to more mechanical filtration and some bio media.

Why do you want 2 sumps? I have a 500 4x8 tank and only use a 40 gal overhead sump. The internal pump is covered with an artificial landscaping rock that breaks the surface. You can't see it at all. If you really want 2, I'd probably get a round sump for the bottom and use it as a settling tank pumped into filter socks followed by bio above.

Yes. 2 sumps. Well I already have a 120 gallon sump that I was going to use. But I want to add an above sump for easy access for most of the mechanical filter.

Great idea with that egg crate to make it a filter sock holder. How'd you get the egg crate to hold? Silicone?
