You have emperor 400's?
The best way I have found to up the mechanical filtration on them is to take the gray media container and fill it with polyester batting. From a fabric store or walmart craft department. They sell it in bags for like 3 bucks.
Once you start to run that the regular filter inserts will be like a prefilter. And they will take alot longer to get dirty. And the media containers will catch alot smaller particles and because they hold alot of the poly they will take a couple of weeks at the minimum before the y need rinsed or changed.
I never rinse my filters on the 400's until the water flows over them. And set up like this mine last about a month before they need to be cleaned. And they keep the tank alot cleaner as well .
