i got mine the other week as a second filter for my 180, i put carbon in the top tray, eheim substrat pro in the middle and the eheim rings in the bottom

Well i Got the FX5 last night, half the media didn't arrive so i had to make do......
At present it has 1l of the eheim substrate and 1 basket full of some old rings i had running in the overhead filter.
Well be going to get some more media on sunday, IE some substrate pro and Eheim ceramic rings.

that matrixx stuff is sposed to be really good too and as someone said earlier dont forget to put em in those bags either!
Here's my take on the whole "quality of media" thing. It's all the same basic crapolla. Whether you have the ceramic rings, or bio balls, or lava rocks, or army men, or plastic scrubbies, it really about personal preference and cost. Someone posted a link to surface area. Pick something with a high surface area and stuff your filter baskets. Ammonia removing media is good for a tank that is not yet fully established, but really doesn't do much for long term. Use it to start, but replace with it something that will support a healthy bacteria colony. Think about the DIY W/D systems you read about in here. They don't fill them with high end aquarium products for the most part, but dollar store pot scrubbers or in my case, lil green army men and 5 lbs. of lava rocks.
in my fx 5 i have i put in polishing pads for fine particles and they are amazing !! water is crystal clear !!
Mine I am runnning the polishing pads, Zero Carb, Bio Max, Pre Filter and the fine pads. I agree it is a personal preference on what you like and dislike.
