Here's my take on the whole "quality of media" thing. It's all the same basic crapolla. Whether you have the ceramic rings, or bio balls, or lava rocks, or army men, or plastic scrubbies, it really about personal preference and cost. Someone posted a link to surface area. Pick something with a high surface area and stuff your filter baskets. Ammonia removing media is good for a tank that is not yet fully established, but really doesn't do much for long term. Use it to start, but replace with it something that will support a healthy bacteria colony. Think about the DIY W/D systems you read about in here. They don't fill them with high end aquarium products for the most part, but dollar store pot scrubbers or in my case, lil green army men and 5 lbs. of lava rocks.
