Here&There
Between my 3 tanks I have 3 Emperor400s & 2 Emperor 280s. I occasionally use the Marineland cartridges, but often cut out filter pad and put it in. If I dont have anything in the area for the media cartridges can I just unceremoniously cram the area full of filterfloss, bioballs, ceramictubes/biomedia? Other than the fact that this would complicate filter maintenance, is it OK to do? I am thinking mostly of the filter floss or a cut-your-own-filter-pad material that would be cheap and easier to remove. Anyone done this? I can't think of a reason it wouldn't work.

All I use on my emperors now. Sounds dumb but I usually keep the plastic to hold carbon it comes with in the back slot with filter floss in the front. Yeah not the best probably but it works really well and my waters nice and clear. Like you said, simple, easy n cheap

I use a half of one of the grey media holders as a kind of backstop for my cut-to-fit filter pads. Right now I just cut them to about the same size as the Emp filter cartridges, but i was thinking I could maybe get better filtration by cramming more filter pad or filter floss into that part of the Emperor.

i just took out the media bag/box and put in two of the hot magnum sleeves, in there it seems to work really well i might put in one more if it will fit

i just took a razor trimmed all the blue pad off of old used filter carts and cut a piece of 100% polyester quilt batting not the flame proof kind i buy at walmart and make a V small cut on the top and bottom of each side of the plastic frame. lay the pad i cut on top put a small rubber band in the v cut notches. simple fast and very cheap.
