In my opinion the type of media, be it bio-balls, scrubbies, chunks of lava rock, or fluidized sand, has less importance than the regular cleaning of mechanical media, making sure gunk doesn't create anaerobic conditions in in the bio-media, and performance of regular water changes.
I use lava rock, fluidized sand, pond matrix, and float old bio-wheels in my sumps, any old junk, if it works as a surface for beneficial bacteria to colonize, it is used.
