Media question

Don't worry about posting the question here, just giving you heads up for future reference. The problem with HOB on planted tanks is the loss of co2 through surface aggitation. Canisters are the only readily available method in the hobby right now.

i have some filters similar to these and one thing i found was the flow rate slows to at least half when it is filled with media.
they are good for the price but make sure that your filtration far exeeds what you need.

That's really good to know - thanks! (Another board I frequent gets really annoyed if you create a new thread without having looked for one that likely already exists on the same topic! But I see where you guys are coming from. )

i am also a fan of the great city of boston... haha. anyways, as far as media go, i've had wonderful results with matrix rocks. i believe they are made by seachem. same idea as the eheim rocks but possibly more surface area... but i've been wrong before

YES! AquaWorld at Gravois and Gustine (near Grand). Jason and John are the brothers who own it and they have the best stock I've seen and every tank in the store has gorgeous healthy plants in it. I've never lost a fish from them (unless it was blatently my fault) and they know their stuff. They have reef tanks set up in the store too (and an indoor koi/pleco pond right when you walk in), but all of the stock they keep in the store is FW. Also, their prices seem higher than you can find at most other places, but I found it to be WELL worth the little bit extra to have them NOT get the rest of my tank sick with something. And if you get to know the guys a little and bother to ask (like, if you're buying a whole bunch of stuff at once) they'll usually knock a little off for you. Or do things like giving you ~25 ghost shrimp and charging you for 12, you know? They're cool like that.
