media surface area comparison thread ?

The expense is relative to the level of filtration sought. If the pot scrubbies do the job 100% then that's ideal. I added the more expensive media to my systems to better help me in keeping $40k worth of fish happy. The cost of the media is greatly offset by the value of the fish. And, as stated, I still use pot scrubbies in the coarse filtration parts of my filters. It's more of a 'go with your gut'/'do what feels right' for the fish.

Yes they are expensive. For filters I have 2 eheim 2262, 3 eheim 2028 and a sunsun 4 stage. Cost of filter material are around $330.

BUT...in an enclosed system like a canister, pot scrubbers have far less bio capacity than these materials(eheim substract pro), and clogs up way too fast for my liking. If it saves me 10 cleanings a year, the extra expense are well worth it.

I can see pot scrubbers can replace bio balls in wet dry applications where separate mechanical filtration state can eliminate much of the big particles, and easy to access. In a canister, they do not hold any advantage to traditional biofiltration material(of course, one should not use bio balls in a canister anyway.)

Ya I hear ya there if ya can afford 40k worth of fish then media aint that bad... But my fish aren't really expensive at all...

Ya I have 4 litres worth of matrix here I can use as submerged media in the 2nd chamber of the sump and I've been think either bio balls or pot scrubbies in a wet/dry section of the sump... But that's where I'm heading is a wet/dry sump 3 chamber, likely use the 4 litres of matrix as just submerged media and then the 3.3litres worth of biomax as in my fx5 with polishing pads to polsih the water crystal clean

The problem with a lot of these materials is clogging. I know people have a lot of opinions but when small pore size or fine mesh is involved clogging happens fast. Sand filters have the best surface area by far, but they clog easily. Fluidized bed filters are the best surface area by far.

I am setting up a large sump relatively soon with 50 gallons of bioballs. By my calculations that should be enough for 3250 gallons of water which is 4 times what I will have. With the addition of accessory sponge filters used for emergencies it should work out well.

Basically I wanna have enough to do up to 300gal tank and even then some ...

So I'm kinda thinking either a 75-75g tank divided in 3 chambers, OR 110g stock tank with a rubbermaid tower as the wet/dry chamber which will have pads in there to catch and filter out large and small particals which will only take a few seconds to take out and change as it will be exposed on the top and then it will be filled with either scrubbies or bioballs maybe even both, and then down below it fully submerged in the water 4litres of seachem pond matrix (I already have it here) and a fart load of more pot scrubbies sinking/floating, and then a fx5 that's filled top to bottom with 3.3litres of biomax (which I have already) and some fine filter/pillow floss to help polish water (sucks water from the sump, and dumps it it back in the sump then the sump pump shoots it back to the tank...

Would something like that work you guys ? I already have most of the expensive materials media basically just need a fart load of scrubbies...
