meduim sized background fish

just what i was after. my cousin recommended them to me in summer but didnt have time to get any. do you know how long they grow and temperment?

They're said to reach 12", 10" is the biggest I've seen, mine is 8" and maybe 18 months old. They can be aggressive toward each other so singly or 6+ is best. They can be skittish especially when small or newly acquired, mine has calmed down a lot & will almost but not quite eat from my hand. They like meaty foods and rarely leave the top third of the tank.

i remember our fishshop had 4'' specimans and they were expensive. they must look amazing when they are around 10''. im definately going to get a group of 6 soon. always wanted them but forgot their names.

They used to be somewhat expensive here, and my LFS rarely has them. When they do come in they're not too high now though, mine was a trade back to the LFS and they charged me $10US. The color in the fins really starts to deepen as they grow, and I feed a lot of krill which I think helps that too.

sounds nice. any chance of a photo of yours so i can admire it?
 
why don't you give your tank some substrate, then you won't notice the oscars defication.

might get a fine layer of sand when i get rid of the oscars. those oscars i only bought to mature a new tank, then when job was done give it to a freind. but, the freind went and started a new project so i kept it until anybody i knew wanted it. still stuck with it and they . . . grew
