Meet the Black Squirrel

Black Squirrels are everywhere here in iowa, We actually had one that lived in our back yard as a child who had a white tuft of fur on the end of his tail, i wish i would have taken a picture as he was the mascot of our neighborhood. The rare squirrels around here are the red ones but they also are here in numbers and are absolutley beautiful.

I kind of laughed a little at this thread because black squirrels have been everywhere around me since I was born, its weird for me to think of them as a rariety, but then again i meet people all the time who have never experienced snow, which to me is a blessing lol.

yeah those are more common here than the regular ones are lol. and in a city about an hour from me they have white (leucistic) grey squirrels everywhere. they are famous for it. when i first heard that black ones are rare i was surprised considering how common they are here lol

I'm in Michigan and we have quite a large population of black squirrel. The greys are around but much more secretive than the black phase. Up in northern MI I shoot black squirrels on a regular basis and rarely see grey. Fox squirrels are also very common here especially in the suburbs of Detroit. The red squirrel which is a bit larger than a chipmuck I rarely see anymore.

i have a blond one in my back yard, seriously its blond it looks like somebody bleached its hair.

Our travel group met a rather friendly, fearless black squirrel in Mexico City earlier this year. It liked tortillas. Personally, my favorite squirrels are reds. They're so pretty and fairly rare!

I used to have a mount of one that my dad shot in PA when I was a kid.

Here's another species of squirrel that can be black....the Abert's
