Mega clear vinyl prototype tank build (concept building)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
One of my guys decided the 55 gallon tank was in the way so he emptied it. I didn't realize he had emptied it for a few hours, which gives the vinyl time to clear up. It did appear somewhat cloudy, but I can't say definitively. But judging by the fact that it clouded up when pressed against plexiglass on the small tank, I assume the same would be true with glass and acrylic.

I think it is time to abandon the thought of containing the vinyl aquarium in a nice rigid box. I feel good about the other models though. I can't wait for my plumbing die is finished, so I can plumb up some remote tanks.

What if you placed something like this between the vinyl and glass?

That's why we will rent out inflatable holding ponds for liner changes. :)

How about a heavy duty inflatable aquarium, that would be really cool, no more glass. I think that could actually work.

Note the failed attempted at lighting the tank.

I finally found a cap that works and I'm really happy with it. It performs really well. It has been up and running for about a month.

One issue is that it builds up the brown slime on the surface within a week or so, but it wipes away pretty easily with a soft sponge. I think a pleco would actually eliminate the slime problem because the gold fish tank doesn't get any slime on it at all.

The only other issue is the lighting. I haven't found a good way to illuminate the tank. First I put an LED under the flap at the top (see picture). That didn't work. Then I put an under cabinet LED in a ziploc bag and tossed it in there. That worked pretty well except the batteries would die after half a day and turning it on and off is a chore. I think the answer is to incorporate the light into the cap, but that will be a project for next winter.

My next project is to make a black worm breeder bag that will auto feed my fish as the as the blackworm population grows. My ZigZag Eel (coolest fish in the world btw) won't eat anything else and my other fish seem to enjoy them.

I may also incorporate a biomedia bag in there too. I can run them all off of one pump... maybe I can get rid of my Penguin filter finally.

I think we have a working model albeit a little rough around the edges. At some point I will update the website to allow for purchasing. The pool liner season is quickly approaching and we are working to get ramped up, so my time to develop this product is very limited.

I am really excited about the latest model though and fully intend to pursue its development.

Do you think that it would be tough enough to hold a iguana
Sure, but it would probably look like hell fairly quickly.
