Megalodoras Irwini no longer a suitable tankmate for rays... sorry DB.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He's been in this tank for over a year with no issues. Usually stays hidden in the back of the tank. Yesterday I saw him swimming around and saw the wound. The rays are quite large in this tank and have killed some larger bichirs and other bottom dwellers before. I just figured the "armor" on the irwini would protect him. I have kept a giant niger with no problems with these guys in the past, but he was much bigger.

LOL....... Rays a little hungry?

Mine have been fine for years and I'm sure they will continue to be. My rays can't even get to my catfish as there's a giant pile of driftwood in the middle of the tank just for this reason. Shelter for the 2 irwinis, wolf, and the lil striped rapheal that's just fine in there.

IF I was to pull all the driftwood out of my tanks I'd expect significant losses from the rays chewing on fish that can't hide.

Interesting thought for my build. I had considered putting an overflow in the center to make a racetrack set up. A driftwood pile would be nice and do the same thing. Hesitant about the center overflow, because I won't be able to get under this tank once it is built.

Everyone thinks rays are delicate and the receivers of abuse and not givers but that is far from the truth. They are in my opinion the top predators because they lie in wait and pounce with lightening fast speed. They cannot swallow most fish whole but they use their disk like a hand and catch fish and pin them to have their way with. It takes a strong fish to get out from under a ray. So nothing is safe with rays, it is a matter of if the ray wants to attack or not.

All things considered, the wound looks pretty healthy. Good luck.
