Hey Guys

Im getting my second Mekong Puffer soon, an i know they are not SW fish or freshwater fish, they need/like a lil bit of salt. Now i want to know if it would be OK for me to use beach for the substrate that i can collect. Obviously ill wash it through and filter it, etc.

Thanking You

^ just wanted to let you know you if you are indeed getting an Arrowhead - Monotrete suvattii, they are actually 100% F/W Puffers, and don't require any salt ;)

Also, not sure how good an idea it is to use sand from the beach in a tank, since i personally would be worried about what sort of nasty things you could be putting into your tank...

indeed freshwater only. and i wouldnt do sand from the beach. you may rinse and rinse and rinse, but something microscopic can still be in the sand and mess your tank up. go to home depot and get sand, spend the $5-10 for sand that looks like it came from the beach.

If you want sand, pool filter sand is def the way to go. It's what I have in the 125 gallon and I love it. Doesn't cloud the tank up too terribly bad during cleaning, it only needed a quick rinse to begin with. All around good stuff.
