That's what I thought as well. I had seen him kinda tail whipping for lack of a better term the driftwood and rocks in the tank. But now he has redness around other scales and they are puffing out a bit. The two I have never seen fight. The bass will nudge the far once in a while but that's about it

I was just waiting for your reply what size tank is it?? If it is fighting you are going to have to fix that problem because they will keep fighting. I also have native fish and i've never seen a scraping injury like the one on the bass looks like the gar bit him.
 
the gar is smaller than the bass. if anything the bass chases the gar around more. the tank is a 125 and they are the only two in there.
 
1+ That's what it looks like to me as well. The situation will not resolve until the beasts are discovered and separated. Soon you will have losses.
