MELAFIX directions say to dose daily for 7 days and then the 25% water change. Isn't it odd to first do a water change after 7 full days of Meds in the tank? Or do the Meds just loose strength after 24 hours, so it isn't actually building up in there? Because when you start treatment it said to take the carbon out of the filter. I think I would need to do a partial water change before then. Some advice would be helpful, TIA.

I used it for four days in row and it worked great I did a water change on the fifth day.

Each dose lasts 24 hours. The reason they suggest a 25% water change after 7 days is because there will be a buildup of organics in the tank over the course of the week with the carbon removed (assuming you use carbon). In other words, they suggest doing routine maintenance that doesn't have anything to do with the treatment specifically.

Great to hear some exp./advise! Thank you both very much.:) My fish are doing much better now too. I think after this emergency is over, I'm going to keep the extra airstone/line in the tank too. They actually seem to be enjoying it, like playing in the tiny air bubbles.:D Thanks again, very much.

I wasn't questioning your advice, it seemed to me that the starter of the thread wanted to take other peoples advice as opposed to following the directions on the bottle.

Kinda off topic, they sell melafix for ponds in the pond section of petsmart. Regular melafix is 1% melaluca and the pond version is 5% melaluca. It is anti fungal and anti bacterial hence after I use it and do my 30%+ WC I add bacteria to help cycle (don't know if this is correct but can't hurt). Anyone play with teatree oil 100% pharmisudicle? It's pure melaluca concentrate and I don't know how safe it is to use. I would assume that a drop or two in a hundred gal would be harmless. Any thoughts?

I was treating my beautiful tank of all female Betteas. I lost one, because it had fin rot with an eye half out. I probably should have just taken that one out and treated it. But I treated the whole tank, cause I was worried that they could all be sick and not showing it yet. (I think the eye thing happened when it was trying to get itself underneath everything and anything, when I first noticed the tail starting to split.) The rest look fine. I changed 25% water on 5th day. But still put in a dose after the WC and dosed on 6th and 7th days too. Am trying to figure out where the fin rot came from. I do 25% WC 2 times weekly, treat it and also put the 'Good' bacteria CYCLE in also. Can it have come from an old fish tank ornament? I normally boil things before adding them as decore. But I added some plastic plants from a tank I had years ago.(It was dry, stored in a zip lock bag). I figured if I tried to boild it, it would melt or just break down the chemicals in the plastic, so I just washed it under hot water for a while and let it air dry. What do you ppl think?
