It seems like more and more tainted products are turning up every day!

A while back there was the pet-food problem that killed countless dogs and cats. The official excuse was that melamine was accidentally added to corn gluten... :(

Now it is showing up in products meant for human consumption (notably milk and eggs) in potentially deadly levels.

I had always assumed that it was due to poor quality control. I did a little searching today and read some scary stuff. It seems that manufacturers add small amounts of melamine to falsely register foods as having a high protein content! To think that they would risk people's health to make a little more money is horrible.

Buy your food minimally processed and locally grown whenever possible! :)

I don't mean to bash China or its government in any way. I think they are struggling to keep up with their incredibly rapid industrialization, that's all.

uh-oh. Is Panda Express ok?

Thanks, Liz. This is a real problem - four babies in China died from melamine poisoning. What a lot of people don't realize is how much of your food comes from foreign sources. I hate to sound preachy, but preparing your own food from minimally processed ingredients is the only way to be sure of what you're putting in your body.

Wikepedia has an article on the problem, but it deals mostly with the contaminated pet food.

It will be interesting to see if this is a problem in other parts of the world as well...

http://www.snopes.com/food/warnings/coins.asp its just like this i posted awhile back...in chocolate... be careful of it in the candy holloween..

I hate to jump on the "buy local" bandwagon, but it is true... it would be nice if we got most of our food from within our country where we know the food regulations, but certain things have to come from outside sources (avocado and bananas won't grow where I am ;) ).

Now that we are heading towards a reliance on importing and not producing our own consumables, we are basically at the mercy of a foreign country and their regulations and adherence to them (assuming they are even adequate).

Scary to think what we've eaten in our life time that we don't know about...

I found a very informative article. The first paragraph gets right to the root of the problem:

"Like many similar incidents in the past, the melamine poisoning scandal is just a symptom of a global food system characterized by corporate greed and government neglect."

The article goes into some depth about the chemistry behind Melamine but does not assert how it is getting into the food sources directly.
