That's the fun part of having cichlids. My fish pick up the sand and gravel and look at me and spit it at the glass...nice way to treat the person feeding them! I suggest just sitting back and watching the show.

As previousely stated its typical cichlid behavior. They dig establish territories and search for a mate. The only way to stop it is to remove the gravel.

Then they will just try to go through the glass.:D

Maybe he hates the boat decoration. Lose the boat -not the gravel.

almost all my cichlids do this making an underground filter hard to keep but the one who does it the most is my red devil.. he will put all the gravel in the tank into one place making a mountain.. they have to have fun too you know..

Its not gonna stop. Mine did that when I had him and well at first I didnt know what he was doing so I kept moving the gravel back and he would pile i up and clear a hole everytime I did that, so I gave up. Then I read about it online and stuff. He pretty much making his home and thats also where he will attract his mates and if he were to find a mate then I guess thats where they do there thing. Anywho cichlids dig... and its not gonna stop unless you can talk to your fish and it listens to you.. plus if you acutally sit there and watch it... it can be rather entertaning after awhile..

sorry for the poor pic i know the tank looks bad this was right after i got the tank does he look anything like yours, bc i know mine sure love to dig maybe the biggest digger in the tanks so i know how you feel.
