I just picked up a few of these fish, I always thought they were Melanochromis but now notice Pseudotropheus is also applied. What is the correct name?

Also the store had them labelled as Pseudotropheus interruptus/johanni but these guys have the broken bars. I am surprised they were labelled this way as I do know where they bought them from.

The interruptus were moved from Melanochromis to Pseudotropheus. Johannii is also Pseudotropheus, but is considered a different species from interruptus.

Thanks, I figured both were different species but haven't kept up with name changes in mbuna. I honestly thought Pseudotropheus was redundant a kind of catch all like Haplochromis and Cichlasoma

You are correct about Pseudotropheus...they have been sort of unclassified.

Fish literally spawned in the QT tank. I had to separate the male as he was being a twit. Unfortunately the store only had a few females and appears 1st time spawning as the eggs were eaten this time. Once I get them in their final tank I am sure further success with spawning.
