mesh cast net??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
We have used the shrimp net technique but it is getting harder with the water levels dropping so much. We've been using a regular mono cast net, but we keep gilling stuff and we don't want to do that. And where we go...I don't wanna seine, too many gators. guess we'll just have to use the shrimp net. I don't want to spend a lot on the cloth net just to have it get snagged on some sunken branch.

Thanks for the responses.

a gentleamn I work with just moved back to the northeast 20yr's after moving to florida . he is one of the most hardcore fisherman I've meet . we have talk about fishing all the time . net casting for anytype of fish is ILLEGAL!! reason being there is no garuntee that you will not net a fingerling bass etc.

Do not believe everything you hear, I castnetted in Florida for 20 years, you have to release any gamefish you might catch.

Look at the Florida Sportsman, they are castnetting all the time in that magazine.

Be quiet Conneticut:ROFL:

i live in cali and even own a cast net! even though where i live its illegal to use it. north of point conception it isnt, wich is just 60 miles north of me. and to go to any beach i have to travel 60 miles anyways...

but in fla. i see guys using cast nets all the time. (i bought mine in alabama).

anyone have a link to a site that carries "cloth mesh" cast nets? im looking at cabelas and cant find any, and i did a search on google.

@ Dr. Joe: Sarasota/bradenton area.

And it is certainly legal to use a cast net in florida. Especially since that's the only way to catch mullet. And we certainly do a lot of that from boats, bridges, docks, anywhere that a F&G officer could go by.

hmmm ok dude blow me... putt's..

yeah, there are rules to using the cast net. But you can use them off structures for certain species. and in freshwater you can't use them for certain species, mostly game fish and catfish. But we can sure as hell use them in salt and freshwater. People use them in the damn state park to catch bait, with rangers walking around with them.

these rules are also regional so maybe Ross' buddy was in a region where cast nets weren't allowed.

Still, no need to be a jerk about it.

“Take some for you aunt!” LOL best line. Nice to see they think of their family.

In the vid a F&G oficr actually says something to them.

How do you avoid gators while netting? Poke the water with a 6’ pole?
Sounds real risky to me.

sounds like the F&G tells them to get out of there, may be a no fishing area or private property or west plam may have different regs.

We look really carefully before we throw in freshwater. we don't want any gators, turtles, bass, or gar most of the time.
Mostly when we cast in fress we're going for the tilapia, wild is a lot better than farm raised. you can take as many as you want too (pretty much however you want), as long as they are dead or on ice.
