Mesoheros Festae - Tank Journal 180g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very well done! 180 is big for me!
Very nice job with the cleaning and assembly!
What’s going in it? More festae?

First off, I just want to say thank you all to who are following and have taken the time to reply and like my post. I really appreciate it and am happy to know there's still plenty of Festae lovers out there and nice to see the forum is still active.

I love me some Festae as well, watching this thread to see how he develops.
Best of luck to you and him.

Thanks Jex, I was really looking forward to your updates on your Festae because I acquired mine around the same time. I'm sorry you had to get rid of them and hopefully in the future you'll get the opportunity again.

That is a neat set up you got, I hope one day to get my large tank set up with a big ol cichlid. I live in a town house at the moment and don’t think my floor could support more than my current set up for my flowerhorn. Keep us posted on updates ?

I always use to say the same thing back in the day! Now I'm free to do as I please :) Your time will come soon too mate! Thanks for following.

Festae in full dress are arguably as close to marine fish colours as we can get with freshwater. They are stunning.

Yes, your guy is a bit washed out at the minute. However, I should think all that could possibly change if you could grow out a female from your juveniles and introduce her to him, if they get on, lol, but that's cichlids for you.

So, no pressure, over the next couple of years we want to see some pictures like the one below, lol.

They are indeed amazing specimens mate.

Yeah that's the plan. Fingers crossed it all goes well.

Haha I can't promise you anything but I can tell you now, I'm here for the long haul.

Thanks for posting!

Haha never big enough I say!
Thanks mate, there's more to come but once I get that out the way I can start posting growth updates.
At the moment I have 6 festae and plan to keep 3-4 depending on how things turn out. Stay tuned and you'll see!

Cheers

I am enjoying watching the progress you are making.
In Australia quality Festae are harder than finding a needle in a haystack. This is the reason they remain in my fishroom and I continue to spawn them.

I have keep Festae for a few years now, spawning them many times.

G'day Mate! So glad to see another fellow Aussie Festae keeper! It's guys like you that are helping keep our stock alive and genetics good. Big thank you.

Yes I agree, good quality Festae are hard to find here. I am constantly looking and have come to the conclusion that I have to start from ground up with what I have.

I'm glad you posted because it's given me the moral to update the journal. Your Festae are beautiful examples.

Hopefully in the near future we can trade stock to help diversify ;)

Also my profile pic is from the time I rode a lap around Australia. I currently live in WA now. Will need to re-visit Sydney again soon once this covid sh*t is over. Hope you're doing ok mate.

Would love to see some updates.

I keep my eyes open for quality Festae to add to my breeding project, but I’ve yet to find some. Thankful I have these 8 from my original pair.

I will be happy to trade some stock with you in the future ?

Thank you. The lockdown is getting a little, but you need to do what you got to do

Alright next step was to plumb the tank.

The Eheim Pro 3 has 2 inlets and 1 outlet.

I wanted an extra outlet so I could run one for surface agitation and the other for below water so I added a tee piece and valve to control flow between the two.

I also added in a garden hose connector and valve to help with water changes by use of gravity. Smartest choice I've made!

Apologies for the blurry pics and ratio, I had to screenshot from an old video I had.

Eheim stock triple hose adaptor.

Water change adaptor and valve.

Western side low inlet and surface outlet. Note the heater nicely tucked away.

Blurry shot of back.

Tee piece junction in the middle for the outlets.

Underwater spraybar outlet with valve and an Ehiem surface skimmer and/or mid water inlet.

After all that was done I leveled the tank and did its first wet test. I probably should have done that outside just incase it leaked or exploded but luck was on my side and its been perfect ever since.

To help speed up the cycling process I ran my already seeded Eheim 2217's for a total of approx 3700l/h flow. The turn over rate was pure jizz.

Once the tank was cycled I added the Terror and installed a Kessil marine light I got for free when I bought the tank and also set up a spare 4 foot tank below.

Finally in his new tank. Most likely the most space he's ever had. Time to aquascape it next...

Terror needs a substrate and maybe some drift woods . Would be a great tank . I'd suggest going with a darker natural substrate against the lighter back . The colours would intensify.
GL ?

I like to use the eheim prefilters on my eheim canisters. It helps reduce the amount of waste going into the canister, which means I don't have to open the canister sooner due to reduce flow. I service the foam prefilters every 3 days, and the foam can be replaced with the cylindrical carbon pellets in case I ever had to medicate and remove the medication real quickly. The prefilter foam is a great way to seed it with bacteria for other tanks whenever necessary.
