Messed up cleaning tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
bleach or no bleach, if my entire stock died you can bet that I'd be changing all the media anyways. That's my recommendation at any rate.

lol. thats exactly how I found out as well. I bought the buffer too.....oh well

OP plz excuse this slight derail, but I think it needs to be posted.
@Jc1119, man you just might've accidentally saved my butt! I read that whole link you posted. and I "Just happened" to have some recharged larger-than-recommended-for-the-tanksizes Purigen bags (their first re-charge) from my smaller tanks. They were soaking in a water bucket, and GUESS WHAT? I tested the ph at 6.4, & my tap is 7.7- 7.8.
WHY doesn't Seachem recommend using a buffer that is closer to your tank ph YET?
Thank you for bothering to correct my post!
Is there already an mfk warning thread? Seachem should clarify this for small tanks.

Yeah good point. I haven't used Purigen on any small tanks for years, but I could see how it could have an effect on a smaller system. I still use the buffer anyways because I bought it and figure it might as well not go to waste. Seachem should definitely clarify....

Sorry for the derail as well

Maybe I missed it but would the buffer/purigen be an issue if his pH is stable? Sounds like he may have ruled that problem out but I may have missed something.

OP, have you ruled out stray current? Is it possible a heater lost its seal and is sending current into your tank? Sorry if this has been addressed already and I missed it.

I don't mind all the de-rails it seems people are learning from them. The ph is stable so I don't think that could be it. The hoses are the standard fx5 which I think are plastic. The heaters all seem fine they are working and there is no water inside to lead me to think they are leaking. I really think it is the sand holding whatever chemicals in and it is the wrong season to buy more. I'm going to take it all out to see. Tomorrow I'm going to call bio max and ask them the absorbing properties of their product. It is still full but I'm going to empty it tomorrow and let it dry for a week or so and see if that helps

Sand is non porous and is basically tiny pieces of glass like stone. It is unlikely to be the cause of the problem. Fx5 hoses are ridged plastic... even under water pressure they can have "dead spots" with little to no water flow where pooling is possible. I have never understood why they chose that design from an engineering standpoint. If it were me, which I understand it's not, I would disconnect the hoses and rinse them manually in my bath tub and change the media.

I never knew there were dead spots in the hoses, thanks for the heads up, I just thoroughly washed them out. It looks like the overwhelming majority of people are saying the only thing to do is to change out the media, I get paid next Friday so if it isn’t figured out by then I’ll jump on amazon and order more. Do you think just replacing the biomax will be enough or are the sponges likely to need replaced as well?

The sponges are plastic and the only pores are man made. I would rinse the hell out of them with the highest water pressure you have available... I use lava rock in my canisters for bio filtration. It works great and it's hella cheaper. $2 for a bag of lava rock takes care of my tanks for at least two years. You just have to thoroughly rinse the red dust off the lava rock before you use it.
