messy oscar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 10'' tiger oscar and a 7" albino that used to be in a 55gal. Were smaller then. I now have them in a 120gallon. When I was running my 55 I had a 100 gallons of of filtration. NOw I have 190 of filtration in my 120. All three filters are on the back of the tank. If you add pictus cats...or any catfish with large whiskers....this will deter the oscars from eating them. Raphael cats are also real spicky and the oscars dont eat them. But the pictus cats are much more active.

^^ i agree. i have 2 pictus in with my oscar and he pays them no attention.

my oscars about 5 inches, I think a 50% water change might be good because for the first few days I had a GT in the tank which I got rid of but he tore my oscars fins up a little bit
.
I might just get a larger filter to replace the one I have right now because I have 4 other tanks temporarily running including my bros bearded dragon cage so I don't want to use any more power than I am lol
if I get that aquaclear 110 someone mentiond ( sorry I was to lazy to quote) will the current in the tank be to strong?

strong current will help your fish it seem to invigorate and stimulate them from aeration
of tank. Use salt for your oscar; will help with healing.

Aqua clear is def. a good hang on back filter; It's what i use with all my tanks. Don't know what your orig. Hang on back filter is; coudn't hurt to use both since your orig. filter also has the nitro bacterias.

He already got hang on the back fltere, I was thinking to use canister with his orig. filter
as supplement. Don't know about 50% every 3 days though, maybe 30-40%

Wondering about size of the oscar right now?

I don't know why people are afraid of large water changes. I do a 90% every 5-10 days.

I got a Synodontis eupterus to be the janitor for my Oscars. They get about 6" and are pretty good at cleaning up whatever the Oscars spit out. There's enough food spit out for the syno that I don't have to feed him and his belly stays nice and round.

I just set up the tank about 2 months ago so i wasn't sure if it would be a good idea to do that big of a water change weekly but I certainly could it if will be better for my oscar.

the HOB filter I have now doesn't allow you to adust the flow and it the return pours out almost straight forward and the bubbles spread across the front glass which makes my fish almost topple over from the force, I just don't want the filter to be as strong as a push as this one.

l I was mistaken I thought Aquaclear 110 ment it was for 110g, thats just the name lol, I am looking towards the ones for made for 50 or 70gallons which one should I buy ??
considering I have a 55

The only reason I thought 50% might be more beneficial is because he's such a messy fish and Oscars are so prone to HITH. If you can vacuum the uneaten food out, and give him 50% fresh water, you'll be going that extra step to prevent it, considering the tank has a considerable bioload.
