I'm trying to light a large tank. Arcadia Halides at min £200 seem very overpriced. I've seen 400 watt Metal Halide Floodlights for £40. Anyone used these on tanks? They come in weather proof casings. I'm sure the buld is sceened in glass which will adsorb the UV, but this could be removed and replaced.... and thats a lot of light for not much money!!!!!!!!

yeh agrred u may also want to enclose them in some sort of box with glass cover so as to stop moisture from getting ino wiring etc.

They come in weather proof metal fittings for mounting outside... Youd have to remove the glass to get the UV, but 400w halides could be hung pretty high above the tank... in fact they'd need to be too stop them boiling it! At the temp the bulbs run at water vapour wont get into the wiring past the bulb when they are running, you'd prob wat to replace the glass when they were off though... could rig something up with quick release bolts?????

The tanks 250 gallons. I dont think it will wash the colours out as they use halide spotlights in shops to bring the colours out in displays, but those are usually 70 watts so I dont know... I hope not... Has anyone ever had any problems with too muck light upsetting their fish? As long as they have somewhere to hide I think they should be okay?

Ganja in the valleys? Who'd have thunk it?
