are those wire-framed metal shelves for tools, clothes etc that u can buy at city mill strong enough to hold a tank? judging by the average footprint of those kinda shelves i'd say for up to about 29 gal in size?

my gf wants to buy one of those adjustable/attachable/"Add or remove shelf" type of metal shelfing for that purpose..

it SOUNDS like a good and bad idea, but good because of the multiple shelf layers that are adjustable and can double as light placement and ample equipment storage.

There are different types of those shelves. Some are meant to only hold light things while others can hold cars. You just have to be aware of the weight limit for the shelf. I would go to an equipment supply store and check it out.

tbh i spent days and days reasarching those shelving for my fish room and i concluded that their useless they have very little space between each shelf and are very flexable far to much for supporting tanks i measured the biggest and tbh you would be struggling on getting into a 10g as their really cramped between each shelf and the ones that have a possible strength for a 10g are very expensive and it would be much more safer and cheaper in the end to get pallet racking or make your own out of 2x4

I second that. Building your own out of wood would be much cheaper and MUCH more reliable. A lfs near me has built their own stands and they hold 3 125 gallon tanks without problems.

you have to consult a pro or get some experience because that could be life threatening if a big tank falls on you.

hahaha the tank is going below eye level. I'm not stupid enough to dangerously place the CG on an object higher than need be.

well anyway, i researched a little bit and those adjustable shelves i was talking about can hold up to 280 lbs average. since a 29 gal is 360lbs full, if you halved the waterline i've concluded it will hold.

a self-made wood stand is alot more money than a 65 dollar steel shelf. but i like the cinder block idea. i'm sticking that one in my blog.

i really wouldnt trust any of them but thats more because ive had very bad experiences with them :headbang2

but youve got to also include the glass weight, decor weight and finally the tank weight but all in all their a bad idea its up to you what you do but im just warning you as they are very cramped and its nearly impossible to do maintance in the tanks the cinder block idea could be done for less than the shelving and if you shop around you could make a wooden rack for less :D
