OPPOSE FL S318 Reptile Ban Today
On Tuesday, February 16, Florida’s Senate Environmental Preservation & Conservation Committee will hold a hearing to consider Senate bill 318. If passed, this bill will prohibit ownership & trade of all of the animals addressed by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Reptiles of Concern (ROC) statute. The statute requires permitting, secure caging and micro-chipping. The statute is well thought out and was just recently implemented. It should be allowed to work before the “baby is thrown out with the bath water”. USARK has been engaged on this issue working closely with FWC to improve the statute and increase compliance. We have attended FWC Commission mettings and ROC TAG meetings. S318 would negate all of the efforts of FWC and the Reptile Industry without regard. USARK is currently cooperating with FWC ROC regulations and sponsoring a 24/7 Amnesty Program to bring more stake holders into compliance. S318 would cost jobs and threaten the environmental integrity it seeks to protect. USARK suggests that the Committee Staff listen to the recommendations of FWC and the ROC TAG Committee.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) supports the all out ban of reptiles in Florida and hopes to set precedent for the entire country. They care little for the actual issues, but seek to exploit opportunities to push for the end of all animal ownership and use. HSUS is lobbying hard for S318 in Florida even though they had a position on the ROC TAG Committee they are now attempting to circumvent.
Send a Letter to the EPC Committee and Governor Crist TODAY!
USARK opposes S318. The reptile community must fight together and participate in the USARK grass roots campaign against this ill conceived bill. Please click here to fight S318. http://usark.org/campaign.php?id=11

Well, this thread though a sticky, is out dated now, if anyone has the time with recent info on current events in this field, then please feel free to update this thread for us, then I will look at deleting some of the start in this thread since some stuff has expired.

I would delete the thread but this is a good spot to let our fish people in on how bad the MAN is after our hobbies as well and its sort of a sister hobby to aquariums.

Thanks to all who show concern. Ive been out of the legal loop for a few months but Im sure something is going on, I keep getting emails from USARK but haven't taken the time, shame on me. Lets try some updates if we can, thanks.

Jason

OHIO- Reptile Ban/ Executive Order
Outgoing Ohio Governor Ted Strickland signed an Executive Order on January 6, 2011 in regards to the possession, sale and transfer of “dangerous wild animals”. This Executive Order mandates the immediate adoption of a new Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife rule that bans private ownership of many exotic animals; including 7 constrictor snakes, all venomous and crocodilians. Possession of such animals currently in private ownership will be grandfathered under specific conditions. All trade or transfer of possession is banned except under certain circumstances. This order is temporary for the next 90 days. The rulemaking process has been initiated and should include participation from all stakeholders.
USARK is engaging in the process and reaching out to newly elected Governor Kasich’s office. The new Governor is a reasonable man and very pro small business. Currently he does not have a complete picture of the dynamics or facts of this issue. USARK is working to educate the Governor on the reality of this situation; as well as the ideologically skewed perspective of proponents from the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).
Governor Kasich has the power to reverse this order once he understands the facts. It is up to USARK and the Reptile Nation to voice our concerns and help the Governor understand that reptiles do not, nor have they ever, posed a measureable public safety risk in Ohio. The scare tactics and misrepresentations espoused by the HSUS must not be allowed to go unchallenged by the truth.
