MFK filtration test lab

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
for the most part many of the experienced hobbiests on mfk suggest pretty much the same products, and personally i much prefer to take opinions from real world people using these products in real world situations rather than someone who isnt truly devoted to the outcome of the test. besides what if these tests suggested an ac110 was the best hob in the world so you put it on ur prized flowerhorn tank, only to have it fail while ur at work, killing ur fish. despite the test results ur opinion would be to never buy one again. we all have valid opinions, and we always will, but in the end its what you think is the best.

hhmmm....now how to decide what is the best fish!:D

If you're looking for professionals to carry out this type of investigation, you're probably out of luck. I already have an full-time engineering occupation. I'm in this hobby to relax and get away from my regular work. If I were to take on a study of this magnitude, I would expect my time (and very expensive education) to be well compensated for. The standard contract industry rate for electromechanical engineers is $100.00/hr with time and a half/doubletime/holiday rates for after hours and weekend demand service. Without being compensated as a professional in this type of study, any results would be purely personal opinion.

Wish you hadn't said that Oddball, I was trying to get people to do it out of the kindness of their hearts for tha benifit of the hobby. (Wish I could put music behind this... dum deedumtydum ti dum ti dumpty dumpy dum (flags waving here))

It is supposed to be divided up into small parts, most of this testing will consume some unmonitored time, just documentation.

One or two people on here were bio-chemists could do some water / chemistry testing...Mechanical engineers could do flow testing etc.

The pretty ones are the best...no wait...the most expensive ones are the best...or the biggest ones. :D

This is nice (SW) and relatively low budget

http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2005/6/aafeature#2

I work in the biological sciences department of a state university
During the winter my lab has nothing to do (fantasy football)
So I have access to everything needed for a robust study

My thoughts originally were that it would be cool if individuals ran their own test
And submitted results to a forum for the benefit of others

This could be real cool
lots of innovation possible
Ehiem and Hagen dont offer sh@t about how well their product performs

All that is needed (other than interest) is a procedure so everyone is doing roughly the same experiment

Interesting thread...

Well lets keep this thread alive and serious for awhile and see what interest we get.
