I believe every lfs should have a mfk member working there. The reason I say this is cause the common knowledge we educated ourselves with the average lfs employees don't have. Today I went to the lfs just to look around and see what new fish they got. Someone brought in some unwanted fish . One of the fish was a 16" rtc x tsn and they labeled it as a Asian rtc. When I told the owner what it was he was set on it being a Asian rtc. Till I pulled out my phone and showed him a few members rtc x tsns and he was at a lose. Then another regular came in and asked what would be needed to keep the teacup ray they had. So he was saying to the customer that a a tank with a footprint of a 75 was sufficient enough for life. So obviously I put my two cent. Told the customer how to properly keep a ray. The owner was baffled by my vast knowledge of not only the bigger fish but the community fish also. I told him things that he didn't and he's been in the business for about how old I am.

Sorry if sound like I'm talking out my ass but just figured I'd share this.

I would be cool with a weekend job to supplement my income. :) You hiring?

Oh and i don't agree with everyone else automatically, so should I be loyal to my boss the lfs owner who wants to sell stuff so he stays in business, the customer who wants to buy stuff because he is excited by the hobby, the distribution people who don't care if fish die because they have more they want to sell, or the people on here who either want all fish to live forever on flakes and pellets or the ones who think keeping one jerk-fish who is hyper agressive is cool and eats thousands of feeder and/or any other fish put in its tank? Or should I be loyal to my own beliefs and keep fish that get big but most likely don't want to kill anything else I put in the tank? lol

Too many schools of thought..

We also gotta remember that stores need to make money too, so while your intentions are good, keep in mind that its also the people who cant keep fish alive that keep some stores afloat...

Not to mention, some customers dont want to be schooled on how to keep fish for whatever reason... Seen customers complain at employees in the past saying they will do what they want, and that after being "schooled" by an employee, they wont go back to said store no more... Which is why sometimes its better to keep quiet...

Agreed. It sucks but I eat sushi and some people on here who get pissed at lfs's also dump tons of feeder goldfish in their tanks to be eaten all the time. My kids made me set up a goldfish tank for the fish they win at the fair every year. Some are a few years old now and darned if they aren't pretty awesome fish too.. So hard to figure out what is ethical in this hobby when the pet is a commodity.

You guys made good points. Its true everyone has different beliefs about fish keeping. To be honest I hate to see fish die because of inexperienced keepers. That's why I put my two cents. The guy ended up buying the ray anyways I'm just glad he listened to my advice.

For what its worth, thats really awesome that you helped get a fish keeper started with a ray on the right path. :) I hope to have rays one day, but i won't unless I have a setup I can keep them for life.

I work at a LFS and i try to help people learn about fish cause the guy that does the freshwater were i work doesn't know what he doing and i am not aload to say a thing if he is tell a customers the worng thing about a fish... :(

Yeah, it can get pretty ridiculous. I remember when I setup my first tank with my wife (gf at the time). She wanted fancy goldfish and the guy told us we could have around 10-12 in a 29g tank. Thankfully I did some research before buying and learned that the filter he said would be sufficient was rated for a 10g and that 10-12 was WAY too many. Unfortunately my research wasn't good enough and we still ended up with like 8 fish - it was ridiculous and I learned the hard way to either way over filter and lots of water changes or just properly stock the tank.
