I work at a LFS and i try to help people learn about fish cause the guy that does the freshwater were i work doesn't know what he doing and i am not aload to say a thing if he is tell a customers the worng thing about a fish... :(

One of the other employees is like that. Before I really started becoming friends with I bought a midevil that they he labeled a fh. He was truely set on it too.

Yeah, it can get pretty ridiculous. I remember when I setup my first tank with my wife (gf at the time). She wanted fancy goldfish and the guy told us we could have around 10-12 in a 29g tank. Thankfully I did some research before buying and learned that the filter he said would be sufficient was rated for a 10g and that 10-12 was WAY too many. Unfortunately my research wasn't good enough and we still ended up with like 8 fish - it was ridiculous and I learned the hard way to either way over filter and lots of water changes or just properly stock the tank.

Yeah I started with a similar story. I think we all learned the hard way but that's the importance in educating yourself about fish keeping.

Petco is now selling arowanas and needle nose gars

Mine had tsn and Pike time I went. The "aquatic specialist " didn't even know what type of Pike it was till I said it. Then when I said most people don't have tanks big enough to house them for life comfortablly and she didn't seem to care. Just wanted to make money. Witch is sad to see a fish suffer over stupidity and greed

You have to be loyal to the customer. Yes you need to make your boss and distributers happy, but if you keep giving bad info to customers to make sales and their stock dies, they wont keep buying, they will get out of the hobby. We all know how expensive the learning curve can be and for many people just starting out, it is just too discouraging. You also have to feel out the customer. If he is interested and listening to your advice, teach him. If he looks bored or isnt paying attention, let it go. Some dont want to hear it and some dont care.

Petco and arrowanas what?! I don't think this to be true but if so wow times have changed. Well I mean petsmart has some FH now so guess its possible

I've found all the most successful LFS' over here tend to be the ones that offer genuine advice when a person is willing to ask and learn...

The ones that dont, they tend not to ask too many questions, although these stores tend to deal with plants and small fish rather than monsters...

That's true. The lfs store seemed to be happy with me and my knowledge. This morning he called me and asked if I wanted to come by and help out. I am gunna working off the books for him when he needs a hand.

I looked at the Petco Arowana care sheet thing, and they say they need at least 180 gallons to keep for life, but I'm sure they need a larger tank than that and I'm also sure it wouldn't stop them from selling to to some kid with a goldfish bowl :(
