im sure someone else has figured it out, but you can buy metal halide "security lights out door rated 170 watt for about 120$ at home depot with a switchable ballast for multiple voltages, 120, 220, etc, just wire it and set it up and save a butt load of money.. im going to be adding one soon i have the light, but the bulb they give you is about 4000k which is far to yellow appearing to me

I may be mistaken, but aren't those fixtures designed to run floodlight style bulbs? I am unsure that a mogul bulb would be as safe to run in that fixture. But it looks like you are researching them and will make a good decision when the time comes. Good luck. If you do go with this fixture, be sure to post pics when it is up and running on your tank.

will do, its a project for the weekend my understanding so far is the bulb for the fixture i bought is the same as the ones the sell at my lfs its just a medium base mh bulb, i'll definitly post pics as well, hopefully in the end this helps others out or saves them from any mistakes i come across heh

The biggest problem with those fixtures arises in that the fixtures are not sealed to protect against moisture. This will not only shorten the bulbs life to only a few months, but the fixtures life to less than a year.
