Michigan encourages people to release aquarium fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There is a Chinese saying that covers this perfectly. It goes something like, "The mountains are high, and the emperor is far." Which means pretty much that once that fish is in your aquarium, as long as you don't draw attention to yourself, you're not likely to get caught. Not to mention that anyone who cares is likely to have much better things to do then to chase you for a couple aquarium fish.

I think you guys might be reading this wrong. It's an intended logical circle. If you catch the fish you can keep it, until the season is over, at which time you must release it. Makes no sense. It makes keeping them so hard to deal with it actually discourages the practice. So, they aren't actually taking any freedom from you, just limiting what you can do to the point you won't do it ie. dicourages the practice of.

Yup, Bob is right. That response is almost identical to the response I got from an NY agent some years ago. He gave the largemouth example but also gave an example for muskellunge. In NY a muskie must be 30 something inches I believe. As if anyone is gonna put one of those in an aquarium and release in during the off season. Shame the fish can't just count as part of your daily limit.

I'm glad our fishing season is from Jan 1 to Dec 31.

Do you mean for bass? Because in Michigan you can fish year round. You just can't fish for fish like bass, pike, walleye, etc during certain times.

I just found this shocking tidbit on the FAQ at the DNR site

http://midnr.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/M...fiZwX3Byb2RfbHZsMj1_YW55fiZwX3BhZ2U9MQ**&p_li=

Am I right in thinking that a fish you have kept in an aquarium could catch a disease/parasite not native to Michigan waters? Wouldn't it be easier and smarter if you could go to the DNR and get a paper proving you caught the fish during the legal season

lol thats probably how places got bighead carp and zebra mussels!
