YAY!!!! The salmon are in the Manistee/little Manistee, Pere Marquete(sp?), Baldwin and almost all of the upper Michigan rivers.:headbang2The run has just started but with the low temps and rain they will be comming in quick. Tippy Dam is one of my favorite fisheries and has soooo many Kings/cohos you can almost walk across the river on their backs.:naughty: Two weeks from now(weather permitting) they should be in full run:nilly:. With people elbow to elbow its makes it hard to fish but with light tackle(12#test/ 10# leader) the catch is amazing considering they can weigh in excess of 30#:WHOA:. IMO theres nothing like catching a huge KING salmon(chinook) on a river stuffed full of ppl(get the hell out of my way, i got a fish on)with light tackle. Most of the people there are useing 30-40# spider wire:WHOA: with huge weighted hooks(very illegal), wheres the fun in that?:screwy: Heres some pics of my last years catch on the Pere Marquette at Tippy dam. These are just a few of the many we caught...

Opps hit the wrong key. should say 20# but a 30+ pounder would be nice.:drool::naughty:

We were going to go to Cheboygan tomorrow but the fish are not showing enough to make the drive, I may shoot for the Tippy Dam, not sure, never been Salmon fishing.

I'm going to use my regular spinning reel and 15lb line :)

I usually use 12lb for Pike, Bass etc. and figure 15lb will be fun with a 20lb fishy.

It should be just fine considering you have a good drag. I like to use my 9' pike rod with 12# and 10# leader but whatever works. Good luck at Tippy but they are just getting up there so you might spend the day with no fish. The Weir on the little Manistee would be a better choice as long as your going that way. Theres more in there and the gates are closed until mid OCT. so they cant go any further, just be careful to stay 300' from the Weir..

yea im waiting a bit before i go back out drifting at my local dam..but its gonna be a good year

Nice!! I went today and holy crap is the water way to high!!! The water was OVER the banks and it was so dirty you couldnt see your hook 1" under water. I will try again next week. I did go up to the hatchery were there were 50 or so salmon waiting for them to turn the pumps in the hatchery on. Thats a cool sight, all those monster fish sitting right in front of you jumping. :)

says rivers closed from Manistee Lake to 300ft below weir.

"The weir is usually put in place on, or about August 15th, and removed on, or about November 15th"

"While the weir is in place, all fish passage is blocked."

" From 300 feet below the weir down to Manistee Lake, the river is closed to fishing from September 1-November 14"

Is this not true or????

There is a marker(white pole) 300' from the Weir, fishing IS allowed beyound this marker throughout the salmon fishing season.
The passage is blocked so DNR can open a shoot to their holding ponds for milking of eggs and sperm of the salmon, to be later used to reintroduce more salmon into the rivers of Michigan.
Fishing is allowed if certain criteria is met regarding rules/regulations at that point in the river ie: Live bait is NOT alllowed, Lures and hook regulations exsist in this region of the river but fishing IS allowed.(See DRN salmon and trout guide)
