You know that's a great point and I have never gave it much thought. You right why use it. Thanks I guess its just an old habit.

It's such a waste of money since you need to replace it frequently if you happen to use it since it breaks down over time. With floss, sponge & biomax, you get a very long time span before you need to change out anything, and even changing the floss is cheap since you can buy it in huge rolls & cut to size anyway.
 
What's your take on the bio balls I have the biomax in the filter now it goes floss bio ball, biomax, carbon/crushed coral, sponge

I don't like bio balls at all in canister filters. Imo they should be for sumps only or wet/dry. Biomax or seachem matrix (what I use), is much better for beneficial bacteria and flow.

I don't use bioballs as I have an Eheim 2078 so I can't even begin to comment on their use at all, but it seems that for many with that particular setup, they stand by their use.
I have 1 tray of Ehfimech (biomax), 3 trays of Substrat pro, floss, sponge (from bottom to top)
