I'm not sure if this would be classified as micro-bubbles cause I'm pretty new to canister filters and I've only heard them mentioned, but:

Every few seconds my newly set-up eheim 2262 is making a sort of hissing-fizzing sound, and when it's louder, I can actually see some air bubbles shoot out of it. And it seems like there's a lot of tiny air bubbles floating around in the tank.

Should I shut off the filter cause of the damage the air is damaging the pump? And what's the cause of this/how can I fix it? The intake for the filter is not near any air, and obviously I thought it was all air-tight.

I heard that the "blue pads" being used as media can cause this, but the pads in mine, while blue, are the sort of rectangular blue ones you'd use in a sump, just sort of stuffed tightly into the canister. Are they the cause?

The other media in there's eheim substrat and ceramic rings.

Thanks!

Sounds like ur siphoning in bubbles or air somehow? Look at ur straining, do you see it sucking in stray bubbles form aerators or powerheads? I know exactly the sound ur talking about

I don't think that's possible. It's all the way at the bottom of a 220g with no aeration at all around it. In fact, at times this thing pulls so much air in that it actually hisses for a second and seems to stall, then pumps out a bunch of bubbles that surprise the fish (which seem entertained by this). There is a bunch of plant debris around the strainer, but that's all completely under water and should only really slow it down if anything, no?

Check your hose connections; there at some point air leaking in somewhere.

Also, how did you fill up the canister? I followed direction and sucked on the spray bar side until the canister filled up before turning on the pump.

Then air is stuck in ur system, fill the canister w/ water 1st. My xp4 used to do this alot and id have to keep doing it till it sealed. Try removing o rings and gaskets too lube them w/ vaseline

Definitely think it was full, water filled up the tube entirely. And this didn't start till about 1-2 days of operation. I suppose it's possible something vibrated itself loose and I'll have to figure out what. The more pressing question is, are these gusts of air destroying my pump? Should I turn off the filter for now and close the tubes?

I don't think it can do damage but not an expert on that.

When you hear air come up, you can look at the hose; do you see air bubbles coming from the filter through the hose? If you do, then the air is in the filter; but if you don't, check instead the spray bar etc.

Air is definitely blowing out of the up hose and out of the spray bar but I can't tell if any is actually going down into the filter.

Remove the plant debris from the intake strainer. This will definitely cause the problem you are having.

Check that your intake connections are all snug. You might be drawing air in around the connections.

Eliminate any sags or dips in the hoses.
