just one question
, get a tank 1x as wide and high and 3x as long as the fish will grow minimum?
i don't think you can, i can't

already have a 9ft x 2ft plus a 6ft x 3ft plus a 3ft cube plus a load of wood sat out back to start on tropical pond that is 9ft x 4ft x 3ft. also mine are being grown out to go in a 8x4x4 , i have had micros before and know exactly what they need ,didnt learn the hard way as i read up on them 1st . please dont assume that all micro owners have small tanks and cant afford to house there fish correctly

i know what your saying ,and everyone should be warned about the potantial of theese magnificant creatures ,but not everyone goes into micros with there eyes shut , infact there is plenty of people on here who could house a micro in very satisfactory tank sizes , its like saying why do people buy arowanas they also need 3x lengh to swim and have a potential of over 3ft or for that matter redtail cats ,tiger shovelnoses ,devil cats , large gars , stingrays , large eels , the list goes on and on ,

this is mosterfish keepers after all, not tiddlerfish keepers or ordinary fishkeepers, people come here and learn about these great fish and hopefully educate themselves in the process which results in the fish being kept in much better conditions (or iam i just naive ?)

i'm glad you are prepared

u are also correct
ppl shouldn't keep silver arowana
nor tsn,rtc and a few others
most buy em on impulse or unknowing
the few that do know about how and what and have big enough tanks are sadly a very small minority

to be honest ,i think there is a lot more people on here with bigger tanks than you think and that could house bigger fish satisfactory ,i know on a lot of the UK forums that i have visited, people have thought my tank / tanks where massive but on here it would only be considered average at best , i agree with you that big fish in general esp. in the UK are a major problem though ,i think a lot of this is down to the lfs , i think they should give more info out with each purchase , they could maybe hand out a info card / care sheet out with each fish , or have size and compatibility chart up somewhere in the shop , also how many times have you bought Channa and been correctly advised about what temp it should be kept at ? or a brackish fish that is sold as freshwater ,i understand that there in business to make money but surly a customer who is happy with his purchase and the information he /she was given at point of sale would be more likely to return to that store ,it would maybe only add about 50p onto each fish sold to hand out info with each purchase ,or not even that to say to someone "have you read the size and compatibility chart and satisfied yourself about all the requirement for this fish. i my self have in the past gone into a store and managed to purchase a Channa and several guppy's for my daughters tank without once been questioned ,now i would not of minded in the least if someone in there had said to me "sir do you realize that these fish cannot live together" , i was quite relived that they didn't bag them all up together .
also although i try and read up on any purchases i make before hand and if i don't get chance,or if the purchase is something i have never kept before i always ask lots of questions , but often find that the person serving knows less than i do ,this seems more common in the garden centre type outlets (exceptions made for maidenhead aquatics who have now put signs on the tanks stating size of size and tank needed for full grow fish, and have asked many times about my tank size))
anyway ,i don't think we should ban or restrict large growing fish (there are already far to many rules and regulations in this country) but we do have to get the information across somehow about the care requirements of the fish,

they r business men after all but i know a fair few good shops that have higher ethics about selling fish to ppl

as regarding being correctly advised about channa in a shop
never has happened to me yet
