I have a school of 8 Denison Barbs in my 55g and I LOVE them. They're very active, look great, pretty hardy, and grow to about 6", but have small mouths and won't eat other aquarium fish. They can only eat small organisms, like juvenile shrimp or fish under 1/2".
They used to be really expensive ($20+ per fish), but recently they've been farm bred in the U.S. and now the Petsmart stores near me sell them for $7.62/fish. Not sure about their availability/pricing accross the U.S., but ask your local pet store if they can get them.
