Hey this might sound dumb but how in the world do you tell the difference between a midas cichlid and a red devil. I have one and dont know what it is. I bought it from petsmart (i know dumbbbb) and it was in a tank on its own and the guy said it was one or the other. I cant seem to tell them appart.

Its most likely a hybrid between midas and rd, unless you buy a fish from a reputable breeder/vendor you will most likely be hybrids. The petsmart variety do end up as nice looking fish though.

but do you know how to tell the difference. If you ask me they are identical. I know scientifically the midas is Amphilophus citrinellus and the red devil is Amphilophus labiatus but thats the extent of my knowledge.

So you mean Red Devil not Red Terror?

well your title is wrong because its very easy to tell the diff between a midas and red terror but after reading your post you want to know how to tell the difference between a midas and red devil and it almost impossible. if you want a pure red devil then you want to buy from a good source.

wooopsss. sorry its late and ive been googling cichlids all day. I did mean red devil. I was just wondering if it was possible to tell the difference cuz to me every picture i see looks the same whether its a midas or red devil.

I don't think it's hard to tell the difference between the two, as long as they are pure. The problem is that many bought are now a hybrid mix of the two.

Personally I would say your best bet at seeing the difference between these two very similar species is to go to the vendor section of MFK and look up Rapps photographic libraries of wild red devil and wild midas in the Tangled up in Cichlids section. Best photos for comparison that I've seen. Pay close attention to the lips and the angles of the foreheads. Also Midas are much more robust and chunky than devils usually . But as has been said, if you got it from petsmart or a typical lfs 99% of the time it's a mix of the two. Sometimes very cool looking though, I have some that are excellent IMO.

There is a great article on Cichlid Room Companion on the Amphilophus Midas and related fishes.

Check out chc's thread. His Labiatus collection is the best I've seen.

4th pic down, the barred is my absolute fave.
