might be a stupid question

I just set up a 180g with 200#'s of pool filter sand. It worked great. Never got cloudy during the fill process, was very cheap compared to gravel, and shows off the colors of the fish great. So I will use it again if I set up another tank no matter how big or small

I used play sand. I never washed it. It never made my tank cloudy. I just skim the top. Then stir it up a little. I do shut off the filters though. I also use MTS to keep it clean. They do an excellent job when you finally have enough of them and you never see them until you stir the sand

You can just run the cleaner over the top of the sand, It will pick up a little sand but not much. Pleco's are waste machines but the are a great fish i have several, 4 common and 1 sailfin.

Definitely a different kind of play sand than I tried a while back. The stuff I got clouded the water so bad you couldn't see more than 2 or 3" into the tank...and that was after over an hour of rinsing. I think the type of sand is kind of hit or miss based on where it comes from. I really like the pool filter sand that I switched to a few months ago, though. I've got it in two tanks now, and I'll be doing the 120 w/ pfs when it's set up.
