Mike's 45 gallon long (48"x12"x19") planted tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just finished adding the 1/2" layer of play sand, now to wait for the filter to do it's job, and clear the up water! The sand because it's a very light tan color will also help with the Red Texas' color lighten up, since the flourite mix planted substrate is a dark color it meant the Red Texas was fading dark in order to match his surroundings. Got to love natures way for cichlids to be able to darken/lighten up in color to match the darkness/lighting of their surroundings for predatory reasons lol.

Been busy the last few days, but I'm back and on track!!! So the tank looks better with crystal clear water, I plan to trim the plants tomorrow since some of them are starting to break the surface, and the Red Texas is looking awesome since he's lightened up. The Red Texas cichlid is very active, fat and healthy, and is eating without any problems. all of the swords are growing steadily at a good pace of new leaves coming in every 3-4 days, but tomorrow will be "cleaning up" the tank day.

Tomorrow is set for doing a little trimming to the plants, a small water change so I can remove dead leaves from the bottom of the tank, and a little bit of rearranging some of the plants.

So I decided to get rid of the real plants and go with fake plants because my 4" Kamfa Flowerhorn, and 3" Red Texas cichlid are now big enough to start tearing up the plants. So instead of letting them destroy and kill the plants, I figure it's just best to give them away, and let somebody else enjoy them and grow them out. Plus I'll be looking for another big tank next month so I can separate the male flowerhorn from the male red texas cichlid, and then I can breed them both with some female Blood Red Parrot cichlids!!!

Well I got the tank set back up, and running!!! I really like the new hardscape of the tank, and I got my first 2 orders of plants today.

Quite a bit of Red Root Floaters
20 - Rotala mini butterfly
20 - Rotala rotundifolia
10 - Blyxa japonica
6 - Corkscrew val
4 - Rotala colorata
4 - Ludwigia rubin

Waiting on an order of 10 Jungle Vals to come in, and I'll take some pictures of everything in the next couple of days since the water is still a bit cloudy!!!

Pics please! So back to plants in this tank? :what: What changed your mind?

I plan to take some new pictures of the tank this weekend... and yeah I went back to planted...

Here's the story, I ended up getting a Pearl Kamfa Flowerhorn, so I completely tore the tank down from planted to a basic cichlid tank, well the Flowerhorn ended up getting excessively aggressive. So I ended up selling him to a local Flowerhorn breeder here in Denver, guy has over 100 tanks, specifically deals with only Flowerhorns, and breeding new breeds of Flowerhorns so he went to a good home. Then I decided to go back to planted, and here's where I plan to stay.

Well then here you are, welcome back!
