Military ETS/PCS

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Are you letting the military move you? If they move you they will crate up your aquariums and equipment and ship them with your HHGs. As for fish I've had people ship them to their new location and keep them in a temporary tank. The only problem with military moving is the turn around time it takes to get your HHGs where your going.

I'm going through the medboard process right now (Shot by an RPG in Afghanistan) so I'm assuming it will be like an ETS where you move yourself. As much of a hassle as it is dealing with the movers I would be more than willing to deal with them for the low low price of free. I would be okay re-homing some of my fish, but there are a couple that are just too cool to part with.

I PCS'd overseas so I sold all my fish off which sucked. If you have a friend that keeps fish you can have them keep a few of your favorites and then ship them to you. It won't be cheap though, If at all possible I would have them take your fish and professionally pack them. That way they have better odds of surviving especially if it's during the winter months. Also I'm not sure if it's different for the Army but we can send a few hundred pounds of unaccompanied baggage in advance that is quick shipped to our next duty station. If that's an option for you, you could send one of your tanks so you didn't have to wait for all your household goods to arrive. You could sell all the remaining fish that you don't plan on taking with you on CL or to a LFS for store credit and buy equipment and what not the with the credit. I hope this helps. I hav only PCS'd once and it was oversees.

I would suggest trying to talk to the owners or managers of some local independent lfs's. I think you could talk them into temporarily housing and then shipping your fish once you are situated.
I've been at Fort Hood since I've been in, with the exception of a couple iraqs and this korea thing - luckily my wife and kids are home to take care of the fish. I dread having to pcs and was extremely relieved when I got orders back to Hood.
Good Luck , hope it all works out and thank you for your service.

Thanks for the feedback! I was hoping there was some kind of secret fish moving trick that I didn't know about. I probably will have to give them up. Hey fishtex, what unit are you in at hood?
