Milk as Fish Food? Whaaat???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Take a look at the average pet dog, or cat, the vast majority in North America are obese. It's typically not the foods fault, in most cases it's a simple case of operator error. (over feeding) I feed 100% commercial pellet food, and I don't own any obese fish. A hungry fish is a healthy fish.

Great fish.

I have to admit I still struggling with feeding proper amounts daily. I said in a thread I found that a month ago that I've added two fasting days a week to my display tank.

The problem, of.course, is that when I watch the tank, I see the fish looking for food (the clown Loaches especially are always digging away) and I want to feed them.

Since I made that post, I tell myself it's healthier to fast them 1-2 times a week and as you said above, it's a good thing that they are a bit hungry. It also should be obvious to me that they are always gonna be looking for food as when I feed them I the morning they are digging away like when I didn't feed them.

I do find it easier to fast them when I'm going to be gone most of the day or evening so I don't see them digging around (or coming to the glass expecting food).

It's very tempting to feed your fish when they're begging. Thing is, when you've fed them and their little bellies are full they continue begging so it just proves that when they beg they aren't necessarily genuinely hungry. It's that inbuilt feast or famine trigger that has them constantly wanting food.

Mine get fed 5 days out of the week, they can like it or lump it. It's better for them and better for my water quality. That's how I look at it now.

I agree, while it is often easy for humans to give into feeding our pets just one more treat, it's far better for them to give them a little tough love. I feed mine (all adults) 5-6 times a week, once a day, and sparingly. They get enough to keep them healthy, and that's it. Considering most of the females are producing eggs, and ready to spawn every 6 weeks, year round, they are obviously not nutrient starved.

I think this is what happened to my big bumblebee, because he did not have edema. He was fat. I think he was hogging up a lot of food in the tank that I had intended for other fish, and in my critical situation of stocking I should have been Target feeding these guys. There are fry in the tank. I was trying to feed them up a little too much.

But it was one of my biggest fish that suffered.

That Warren really wails on the sax.
I can probably get through Shotgun about halfway before I bite the reed.

Someday when I get bored enough I will go find myself a nice old Selmer baritone.
