milky water - help please

If you find a pool sales place or pool supply store you can pick up 50lb bags of pool filter sand for I believe 15-20$ is what I was getting my at. 1 50lb bag was enough for my 100g when I set it up.

Where I live they're like 4.20$ for a 50lb bag at Lowe's or Home Depot.

I love how people say "PFS is better than playsand." There are so many different kinds and grain sizes of each out there.

Because it is.... Of course there are different granule sizes but the standard PFS you would buy at a hardware store or pool store is pretty universal in size and consistency just as common Play Sand at a hardware store is universal in size and consistency for the most part unless you go looking for a particular uncommon grain size, and if that's the case you might as well be buying the fancy caribbean sand or stuff designed for an aquarium that's like 20$ a bag. I can tell you every Home Depot, or Lowe's I've been to doesn't have a "choose your granule size!" for Play Sand... Just the one 50lb bag.

So because you've been to a few Home Depots and Lowe's in Florida that gives you the expertise to make blanket statements about all the different brands and types of PFS and playsand anywhere else?

Lol, take offense to a regular discussion much? Don't talk about my experience if you know anything about me or my experience. I've purchased PFS and Play Sand at multiple locations including many pool stores in southern east coast Florida where I lived for a while, NW Florida where I live now, all over Colorado where I lived 6 years, and NY where I lived 7 years. I've never seen any variation of Play Sand anywhere. I never claimed to be an expert and certainly didn't post any "blanket" statement, it's an opinion based on my experience.

Glad that person is using Play Sand in their tank. It looks nice. Doesn't change anything I said. I've used it before too. Grow up and try not to be so edgy/rude with your responses. Ridiculous.

You don't think "PFS is better than Play Sand" is a blanket statement? That is the definition of a blanket statement.

So you're claiming you've been purchasing/using different sand in your aquariums for over 11 years? So why did you post a thread last December saying you had never used sand before and asking questions about it?

I believe that makes you a liar, and as far as telling me to "grow up," I believe lying about things like sand is far more immature than me asking ONE question in a post about your experience with different brands and types of sand. You tell me?

Lol, I love how whenever someone has a disagreement with someone on the threads the first thing they do is pull up the persons profile and past threads and start digging to try and find some sort of ammunition to continue an argument.

I never said I've been using sand for 11 years, I said I've purchased the stuff all over the place and never seen multiple selections for Play Sand. My Dad's kept multiple angel tanks that he's used sand in in the past and back when I lived with him we moved a lot so, yes, I've purchased the stuff everywhere but I never said I've been using it myself. Learn to read more carefully. Correct, I myself just started using it back then and that is my opinion on my experience using it. PFS>Play Sand. I'm certainly not going to continue your attempt to derail this thread and start a meaningless argument about sand on a fricken' fishkeeping site meant to help people. The OP was looking for opinions on sand and that was the rest of the thread until you decided come in and argue with my opinion on the matter as opposed to just contributing your own opinion. Just a bored kid looking for something to do. Again, grow up and I won't say anymore because again, I'm not going to condone the derailing of the thread as this is of no help to the OP.

Back on subject. Do yourself a favor and remove the Play Sand before you add fish and go with PFS. You'll thank yourself later OP. ;)

It's not a derail if it is discussing the original topic of sand? I guess a 24 year old with a Saturday off makes me a bored kid now?

Whenever you post something on a "fishkeeping website" like MFK, hundreds, if not thousands, of people have access to that information for years. It is important to put the most accurate information out there.

To the OP, try washing it like suggested and if that doesn't work then consider switching it up. I like to use blasting sand available locally, it comes in different grain sizes and is very clean (Lapis Lustre brand).

We were far from still discussing sand being used in aquariums and having a Saturday off doesn't make anyone a bored kid. Posting something on here intentionally to start a quarrel and not to help makes someone a bored kid. Your original post just came off as rude.

I love how people say "PFS is better than playsand." There are so many different kinds and grain sizes of each out there.

Sure there are plenty of grain sizes for sand and the stuff you just recommended sounds great for OP but as far as I know there is mainly one generic play sand. Blasting sand isn't the same as "play sand" which is what I was referring to. It's not like I was saying PFS is better than all other sand. I know they have the silica base I think and then one that is larger granules that is less silica based and that's it as far as I know for "play sand".

I posted an opinion that didnt agree with your post, that is simply a difference in opinion. If you don't want something discussed, don't post in a discussion forum, start your own blog or something.

There are dozens of different play sands. http://www.google.com/m/products?oe=UTF-8&client=safari&q=play+sand&hl=en&bl=/m/search?q%3Dplay%2Bsand%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dsafari&source=search&channel=products&ei=12P9Tbj1NJHYqAOP9cm7AQ&ved=0CBsQzQM

I said I like to use blasting sand, had nothing to do with playsand.

well after 4 hours of washing the sand, I figured I would give the play sand one more try before I dumped it...
