Hello all, I'm interested in doing a wall/ceiling mounted acrylic tank diy project. I've worked out the math and i don't think hanging the tank will be a problem as long as i keep the total weight under 150-200 lbs. I plan to build a full, reinforced wooden frame to go all the way aroung the tank and mount it across a number of wall and cieling studs.

My concern though is, what is the minimum width I can get away with and have a healthy environment, even if it is only for smaller fish. I was thinking 6 to 8 inches. Anyone done a tank that thin before? Any other concerns related to the width of the tank maybe I'm skipping over?

I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks all.

if the fish are going to be 6-8 in. i would have the tank absolute minimum of 10-11 in.

So would you say as a general rule the tank should be at least twice the width of the longest fish? I have no problem keeping only smaller fish for this tank.

This is my first project and I'm honestly doing it more as a home decoration than a marine biology experiment.

Although I have to admit, my interest has definitely been peaked with some of the info I've learned from these forums about some of the rarer and more interesting species out there...

what are the dimensions going to be?

the width should be ok just keep small fish
have a long skinny community tank

I was thinking 24" high by 36" length by 6-8" deep (width).

Any other possible problems with this?

What type of fish would you recommend for a tropical freshwater tank that size?

oxygenation may become a problem, so just just a few airstones in there. or better yet a co2 diffuser just hooked up to an air pump.

all kinds of tetras, barbs, danios, affrican butterflyfish, corys, angels? maybe, loaches, hachet fish, rasboras, rams, kribs, cons maybe, and other "small" tropical fish

Would that be enough surface area for getting oxygen in the tank? I don't know, but I'm sure someone else has an opinion about that.

Also now they sell these things that look like plasma screens, but are actually fish tanks. here are the dimensions of one I saw on ebay. You should see how theirs work and maybe cop some ideas. Good luck

Dimensions: 25.6"L x 44.5"W x 4.5"D (including frame)
Capactiy: 8.6 Gallons (appears much bigger!)

according to my calculation, that would be around 25 gallons. For a tank that size, I could only recommend small tetras.

a 25 gallon tank (filled) would weigh about 300 lbs. I dont think a couple of screws and wooden beams could support that much from the ceiling.
