yes beachman, that is what i was thinking of.

Here is a link for everyone else: http://cgi.ebay.com/Wall-Mounted-Aq...1QQihZ004QQcategoryZ20755QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

or http://cgi.ebay.com/LRG-Plasma-Wall...7QQihZ014QQcategoryZ20755QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

but just cause they build it and sell it on ebay doesn't mean that all of the fish won't die or be miserable... ;-0

So I still wonder about the minimum width even for the smallest of fish. Do you really think 4-6 inches even with small schooling fish is humane?

Thanks again for all the input.

well its better than a betta bowl a tank that size maybe a few khuli loaches always did love those little fish

I guess the question I really have is: has anyone out there actually had a thin tank and been successful with it?

i'd say go for 6"~8" and do either a school of white cloud minnows and a pair of kuli loaches(cold water) or go tropical planted w/ a male betta, some tetra and a whole bunch of cherry shrimp or a trio of female bettas, tetra and a whole bunch of cherry shrimp. although considering the very small amount of surface area, you might want to consider running a sump or you can make three 24"x6"x8"(LxWxH) and having them overflow into one another, saw a guy on reefcentral do this for a frag system(except it was 48" long) and it was really cool. if you do 3 tanks then you could have a different setup in each tank, like 1 w/ a crayfish, 1 heavily planted w/ a school of tetra and 1 w/ dwarf puffers.

kuhli loaches are a tropical fish not cold water

i have a 60 gallon tall and its 24 taqll, 12 wide and 48 long and its no problem, a thin tank would be very clear and would look cool, but i realy dont know about hanging it, that much water would still weigh about 300-400lb... and thats a lot of weight to be supported my the seling alone..., a tank thats tall but thin(6"-8") would have its coolness too IMO, i wouldnt want one but it would still be cool, you could keep black ghost knives, the depth means nothing to them they swin in all sorts of weird angles, or a wall of tetras with some bog wood and plants would look realy nice.

if you keep a powerhead at the top of the tank or a spray bar with a good bit of water movement you will have no problem with O2...

To support that weight i would go into the sttack and run a 2x6 across a few joists, or if ur tank is going to be runnin in parrallel then a couple 2x4's of course this would only really work in a house with an attic not so well in an appartment heres a quick drawing of what i was thinkin it would support the weight pretty easily IMO
